Start with the job on the screen

A custom application becomes useful when someone can finish a real task inside it. That might mean opening a request, checking the information behind it, choosing an action and knowing what happened afterward. We design those screens and build the software that saves the record and enforces the agreed rules.

The first conversations are about the work: who receives it, where the information comes from and what makes a decision possible. A spreadsheet or a collection of existing screens can be a useful starting point. We look for the places where people have to remember context or carry information between systems before deciding what belongs in the application.

The interface and the record behind it

A request list needs more than a useful arrangement of columns. The application needs to know which states an item can enter, who can change them and what an edit means for work already in progress. We develop the interface alongside those rules, rather than leaving them to be inferred from button labels.

For an illustrative project-intake tool, a coordinator might prepare a request while a team lead approves its assignment. The coordinator should be able to save incomplete work. The lead should see the current scope and any missing information before assigning it. A viewer may need to read the request without being able to change either its content or its owner. These differences shape both the screen and the server-side checks.

AI within an ordinary application

A model can help interpret a document, find relevant guidance or prepare text. Those capabilities still need a place in the application: a way to select the source, inspect the result and continue when the output is incomplete. We build the surrounding experience and the connection to the chosen model for the agreed task.

The application should make clear which content was generated and which details came from a business record. A suggested category can be editable; a confirmed account identifier may need to come directly from the connected system. We work through those distinctions with the people responsible for the process and use representative examples to check them.

When a task is interrupted

An interrupted connection, a rejected update or a second person editing the same item can change what a screen ought to do. We include the relevant failure cases in the build scope. Work entered by a user should not disappear merely because a remote service returned an error, and an uncertain action should not be presented as completed.

Validation belongs near the information being entered. Access rules belong on the server as well as in the interface.

When a task depends on an attachment or another system, its state should explain what the operator can do next. These are parts of a usable application, not details to be added after the main screens are finished.

Agree what the build includes

We define the users, views, records and actions included in the assignment. A small collection of real tasks, with sensitive details removed where needed, helps make that scope testable. It also reveals which existing systems must be available and who can explain their behavior.

The agreed delivery can include source code, configuration, checks and operating notes for the application. Hosting, ongoing support and later changes need their own clear arrangement. The team needs to know which tasks the release supports and how to handle work outside that scope.
